Living the ‘Skiff Life”

Living the ‘Skiff Life”

By Craig Lamb

Fishing hard. Playing harder. Cruising the skinniest of water, or heading out miles away from shore into the blue water. Doing the heavy lifting and transporting the goods for a job. Spending quality time with family and friends on a secluded beach. Watersports? Yep, you do that too. Scuba diving over a wreck in the bay. Snorkeling over a reef on the lookout for a lobster dinner.

All of the above describes the Skiff Life. Carolina Skiff owners have been doing it now for 30 years and counting. After three decades of building loyal customers, those owners define what fishing, playing and working mean in a skiff-designed boat.

Carolina Skiff continues responding to the needs of its loyal owners by designing and evolving with what it takes to live The Skiff Life. Need proof? Here you go.

For novices and skilled boaters, the J-Series is the perfect skiff for entry-level boaters or anyone looking for an affordable boat. The J-Series is the perfect skiff for just knocking around the marina or in the skinniest of sloughs, backwaters or mangroves. With 100 percent composite construction the J-Series doesn’t have an expiration date when it comes to rugged durability and a long lasting finish.

A pillar of the brand is the DLX Series, tracing its roots back to the first model built in 1983. Since then the DLX has built a loyal following as one of the most durable, versatile and stable boats on the water. Plain and simple, you just can’t beat it as a runabout, commercial workboat or for just about any activity on the water.

Could the DLX get even more versatile? Yep, and the proof is in the DLX Tunnel Series. The DLX is known for shallow draft, and that gets even more of a lift with the Tunnel Series.

What gives tunnel hulls an advantage is the higher outboard motor mount. Water is dispersed from the hull into a tunnel. Undisturbed water is then funneled to the prop for better bite and less cavitation. Throttle the outboard and the boat quickly gets on plan and stays there without porpoising. What else happens with a tunnel is better performance and even fuel economy. Less hull in the water means less drag, which also means less fuel consumed.

High payload capacity, extra wide body, tough and reliable. Reads like the advertising tag line for a pickup truck, right?

The reality is those words also describe the DLX Extra Wide Series. The DLX-EW draws very little water while remaining stable. You can carry more weight further and faster using less horsepower. Those unique qualities come from a patented hull design with bow splash guards to keep you dry from spray over the bow. And positive tracking keels on the running surface keep the boat tracking true while maneuvering without the typical flat-bottom slide when making turns. Go extra wide with three models with 103” beams with lengths overall from 23’ 2” to 27’ 1.”

A top choice for fishing in shallow water is the JVX Series. A lightweight hull and modified V-hull design combine for a boat that will carry more, go further and faster with less horsepower. You get excellent maneuverability and handling with the positive tracking keels. Patented splash-guards provide the smooth, dry ride. Choose from nine models in center console, side console or stick steering.

Fishermen have plenty of options from which to choose. Nine different models are in the JVX Series lineup, and you can customize the rig to fit angling needs.

What’s in a name? When the boat is the Ultra Elite Series. The proof is in the name. Ultra means extreme. Superior defines elite. The Ultra Series delivers with three boats in one. Equally at home inshore lake or river, in the bays along the coastline, fishing the tidal creeks and offshore exploring. Whatever the adventure the Ultra Series can do it all. Choose between four models from 19’ to 24.’

Durability, versatility, affordability, combined with a 100% composite construction and quality materials all come together in the Sea Chaser 21 Sea Skiff.

Abundant storage is immediately noticeable in the 21 Sea Skiff. Stow, all that gear and there is a cockpit area free of clutter and open for fishing and fun.

Up front are two spacious bow hatches and anchor box with LED light. Entry is made safe and easy with LED-lit molded steps on the front deck. A 12/24-volt trolling motor plug is pre-wired for easy, clean rigging.

The cockpit features a newly designed console with plenty of space to flush-mount today’s wide-screen electronic units. A removable windshield creates more options for mounting electronics. Flush mount rod holders for six outfits keep them at the ready, and a console live well, and removable 70-quart cooler makes it convenient for storing drinks and fish.

In the back an 18-gallon baitwell with LED lighting for quick access to live bait. Rear jump seats with storage compartments and battery storage feature LED lighting for safety and convenience. For water sports fun the swim platform with stainless steel ladder makes boarding safe and easy.

Hulls are constructed with 100 percent composite materials, and a high-density fiberglass transom core. Patented Box Beam Construction forms each fiberglass stringer as with fiberglass, pre-cast foam logs laminated into the hull one by one. The process allows for an unsinkable wood free hull.

Sea Chaser 26 LX Does it all for Summer Fun

Sea Chaser 26 LX Does it all for Summer Fun

By Craig Lamb

Snorkeling, cruising, beach combing, wildlife viewing, and fishing. The Sea Chaser 26 LX by Carolina Skiff is rigged and ready to do it all. When summer fun combines all of the above activities, this boat will easily make your short list of choices for an all-purpose center console boat.

Red drum, or redfish, is one of the most sought-after saltwater species for summertime angling. Narrow your choices to these five patterns and get the most from your summertime angling for this hard-fighting fish.

Redfish, Home Run Charters, Saltwater Fishing, Lodge, Base camp,

Jetties

Save these rocky structures until late summer. That’s when trophy reds begin congregating around jetties. Focus on the deepest water around the jetties and find those fish magnets using your electronics.

The redfish will school in deep holes and ambush baitfish swept across the neighboring shallow water. For artificial lures use lipless crankbaits and jerk baits fished with an erratic action to draw the attention of the redfish.

Marshes

In South Louisiana these grassy estuaries are ideal for sight fishing. Look for tailing redfish moving along the marsh lines. That is a sign of redfish feeding on small crabs and shrimp. Oyster and grass flats near a marsh line are top targets.

Marches nearest open water, river channels and cuts are best bets in the summertime. Key on areas where bottoms change and have irregular features, like oyster beds, sand flats or mud.

Rig up with jigs and live shrimp or crab for active fish. On calm days add a popping cork to live bait rigs or use a popper type topwater plug to create attention.

Beaches

Keep a big, splashy topwater rigged and ready whenever your boat is beached for an outing with friends and family. Big redfish will herd baitfish, such as mullet, and push them toward the beach. The presence of diving birds is always a good sign of redfish action.

The Sea Chaser 26 LX by Carolina Skiff and its shallow draft are ideal for accessing redfish territory. Length overall is 25’ 11 with a beam of 103.” Weight is 3,432 pounds with a transom size of 25 inches. The boat is rated for a maximum 350 horsepower. This boat is ideal for bays, rivers, lakes and even venturing offshore.

The 26 LX is loaded with a long list of standard features. Some of those are twin forward locking rod storage boxes, locking fiberglass hatches, gunwale rod storage with combing boards, storage locker with 5-gallon cast net bucket and lots of LED lighting.

Spacious raised decks offer plenty of space for fishing at bow and stern. Up front is a pair of tackle trays to keep essentials organized, and twin latches at port and starboards open to storage compartments. There’s a 25-gallon Livewell that keeps bait within easy reach.

At the helm is a leaning post with bench-style seat, complete with backrest, fold-down footrest, four-rod rocket launcher and a sizeable cooler and storage netting. Add an optional T-top for shade and to mount electronics and add more rods.

The Sea Chaser 26 LX by Carolina Skiff has been designed with a stepped hull to ensure unrivaled tracking, turning, fuel efficiency and acceleration. Constructed of 100% composite materials, you get peace of mind knowing this boat carries the legacy of the best-built boat available in the class.
